Ilmari Tapiovaara

Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914–1999) was a Finnish designer and interior architect, known especially for his timeless and functional furniture and his ability to crystallize the Finnish identity.

His design philosophy was characterized by clarity and practicality, and he sought to create objects that would stand the test of time both aesthetically and structurally.

Tapiovaara designed several iconic pieces of furniture, such as the Domus and Aslak chairs, which are still popular both in Finland and in other parts of the world.

Tapiovaara graduated as a furniture designer from the Helsinki School of Art and Industry in 1937. During his career, Tapiovaara worked, among other things, as an assistant in Le Corbusier's office in Paris and Asko Oy as an artistic director and participated in various design projects.

His work has received international recognition, and his furniture represents Finnish design at its best: they are simple, beautiful and, above all, functional.
