The Artek Domus chair is a masterpiece of modern furniture design. The chair's short armrests offer a surprising amount of support and allow the chair to be placed close to a table. The chair is so comfortable that it invites you to sit for extended periods. This unassuming wooden chair became an international sales success 70 years ago. The chair was designed in conjunction with an armchair for the Domus Academica student dormitory in 1946. The stackable Domus chair was created to be suitable for both studying and dining. The chair was Finland's first post-war export success, also known as "The Finn Chair." Knoll served as the distributor for the chair in the large American market.

The chair brought success to its designer, and Tapiovaara received, among other accolades, the Good Design award in Chicago in 1950 and a gold medal at the Milan Triennale the following year. Since 2010, the Domus chair has held its rightful place in Artek's collections alongside other Ilmari Tapiovaara classics. Both the Domus chair and armchair share the same recognizable appearance and short armrests.

The chair is part of the collection launched in 2026, where the upholstery shades are based on color palettes designed for Tapiovaara's previous interior design projects. In 2026, Artek also renewed the chair's surface treatment by switching to more ecological, water-based paints and lacquers. Concurrently, the structure under the seat was also fine-tuned. However, the chair's appearance has remained unchanged – familiar, elegant, and charming.
