Refined durability outdoors

The Muuto Linear Steel product family brings a clear, contemporary expression to outdoor furniture, defined by straight lines and folded edges. Made in Europe, the series spans nine pieces across tables, seating, and lounge furniture, unified by a refined visual language, everyday functionality, and a durability rooted in its steel construction and weather-resistant finishes.

With the Linear Steel Series, designer Thomas Bentzen set out to reinterpret traditional wooden outdoor furniture through a new material language. Drawing inspiration from classic oak tables, he translated their simplicity and attention to detail into steel.

Meetings of lines, shapes and materials

That idea of translation runs through the entire series. Bentzen describes the design as being shaped by the notion of meetings — meetings of lines, shapes and materials — resulting in a form language that feels refined yet understated.

Thomas Bentzen: “The Linear Steel Series was designed from the idea of presenting durable materials in a sophisticated and understated expression for outdoor use,” he says.

These meetings are expressed through the series’ structural intent. Straight lines establish a contemporary yet timeless character, while details such as folded edges, half-circular intersecting legs, and narrow spacing between slats create cohesion across the collection. Together, these subtle gestures translate elegance, longevity, and functionality into modern outdoor furniture.

Galvanized Steel — Protection begins beneath the finish

Linear Steel’s durability is grounded in the material foundation of the series: galvanized steel. Before powder coating, each piece is galvanized — a surface treatment where the steel is coated with zinc to increase resistance to corrosion and rust. Zinc provides what is known as “sacrificial protection”, meaning the zinc layer corrodes before the underlying steel, protecting the structure even if the surface is scratched or locally damaged.

Corrosion occurs when metal reacts with air and moisture, a process that can lead to rust over time. When zinc reacts with oxygen, it forms a protective surface layer. This layer slows down corrosion and helps protect the steel underneath.

For outdoor furniture, galvanization provides reliable protection against moisture, temperature changes, and air pollutants. The zinc layer helps reduce corrosion, supporting long-term durability even with regular use and natural wear.

Finished with a deep matte, UV-resistant powder coating, the Linear Steel Series is designed to withstand changing weather and long-term outdoor use. Selected designs are also available in Warm Galvanized steel, offering a resilient finish with added texture and character.

Expanding the series

Originally launched with a table and bench, the series has gradually expanded to include nine typologies, making it suitable for both residential and hospitality settings—from balconies and gardens to cafés and courtyards.

Comprising coffee tables, café tables, dining tables, benches, bar stools, and a range of seating, including side chairs, armchairs, and lounge chairs, the Linear Steel Outdoor Series adapts to a wide range of outdoor environments. Across the seating designs, shaped seats, tubular structures, and supportive backrests are developed to support comfort in outdoor use, while the steel construction is intended for year-round exposure.

A considered range of sizes, typologies, and colors supports cohesive arrangements across different settings.
