Artek 60 stool wild birch is part of the Forest collection launched by Artek in 2024. The Forest collection includes familiar stools, benches, tables and chairs. Normally, the woods used in Artek products have been carefully selected for their appearance, and only specimens that meet strict selection criteria have ended up in the stools. Because of this, there has been little natural variation in the stools. These limitations have not been related to the durability or quality of the wood, but rather to the market's perception of aesthetic uniformity. In furniture made from wild birch, these aesthetic limitations have been set aside and all kinds of birches and their parts have been selected for production - and that is precisely where the beauty of the products in the Forest collection lies.
The Artek 60 stool, made of wild birch, shows significant knots that were previously excluded from production, traces left by insects, darker heartwood and other possible natural color variations. By doing this, natural resources can be used more responsibly, and waste cannot be created in the same way. The products in the Metsä collection are a great choice for those who value sustainable use of natural resources and design. The products in the Metsä collection made of wild birch have been designed in collaboration with the Italian company Formafantasma.
The Artek 60 stool is a diamond of Finnish furniture design, designed by Alvar Aalto. The beautiful L-shaped stool design will never get old. In addition to being a seat, the 3-legged stool can also be used as a side table, for example next to a bed or armchair. It also works as a spare seat and several stools stack beautifully to form a rotating tower.
In the late 1920s, architect and designer Alvar Aalto began experimenting with wood bending. Together with furniture maker Otto Korhonen, Aalto developed a groundbreaking process that resulted in the L-leg. The iconic leg is created by cutting slits into a piece of wood below the bend, into which wooden slats are glued. Aalto called the L-leg the little sister of the architectural column. Long-standing traditions in furniture production were interrupted when Aalto patented the technique in 1933. The warm, organic wood material was now used to make durable and robust furniture.
